That night, after my roommate went to bed, I did something I’d been doing more and more often when the numbers didn’t add up. I opened my phone and found the online casino app I’d been using for about six months. I’d stumbled into it during a bout of insomnia, stayed for the bright colors and the mindless rhythm, and somehow never left. I wasn’t a gambler. I was a person who sometimes spent fifteen or twenty dollars on slots real money the way other people spent fifteen or twenty dollars on a movie ticket or a bottle of wine. Entertainment. Escape. A brief vacation from the constant, grinding work of being an adult.
But that night, I wasn’t playing for entertainment. I was playing because I was desperate, and desperation makes you stupid, and stupid makes you reckless, and reckless makes you do things like deposit fifty dollars you don’t have into a game you don’t understand in the hopes of winning back a fraction of what you just spent on a water heater. I knew it was a bad idea. I knew the house always wins. I knew the math, the statistics, the cold hard truth that every spin was a tiny donation to a company that didn’t care if I lived or died. But I did it anyway, because the alternative was lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, and thinking about the seven hundred dollars I’d just charged to my credit card.
